Named after Frankfurt am Main in Germany, the township of, "Frankfort Station," was established after the opening of the Joliet & Northern Indiana Railroad in 1855. Incorporated as a village in 1879, it was known thereafter as "Frankfort.'
Known as "The Jewel of the Southwest Suburbs," Frankfort is located just 35 miles southwest of Chicago. In the center of the village is a charming historic district, with excellent shopping and restaurants as well as a scenic prairie park with a hiking trail around a pond. The Old Plank Road bicycle trail travels directly through the historic district, and leads to the Frankfort Country Market.
